Chapter 31
No. It can’t be, Jarryd thought.
The man was an animal. There was no way he could be a Knight. There had to be a mistake.
But there was no time to think about it. Kathor bellowed as he brought the mace around in a mighty swing with enough force behind it to shatter every bone in Jarryd’s body.
The big man’s speed was surprising, and Jarryd had to channel a burst of kriyana to his legs to give him enough speed to sidestep the blow. So much for his hopes of not using kriyana in the fight. He pulled off the foolish horned helmet and tossed it aside so it wouldn’t encumber him.
Almost immediately, Kathor recovered and came around with a lethal backswing aimed for Jarryd’s hip.
Jarryd parried the blow and was shocked at the force behind it. If he hadn’t put kriyana into his parry, the man would have driven his weapon through it by sheer force.
He had a feeling that his sword wouldn’t hold up to many more blows like that. It was old and of poor quality.
He put on a burst of speed to skip back out of range, slashing at Kathor to keep the big man honest. The whole time his thoughts were racing. He had to find a way to convince the man that Jarryd was not his enemy and he had to do it soon.
And then what?
They were bound to fight to the death. How could they possibly both walk out of here alive?
Kathor charged again, the mace a relentless blur of pure, bloody power. Jarryd ducked, dodged, parried when he had to, only his use of kriyana keeping him alive. As it was, he felt one swing pass so close to his jaw that he could feel the wind of its passing.
But, as he fought, his mind was working on the problem. And the skeleton of a plan began to form. It was most likely doomed to fail, for it counted on not just his owner’s response, but Kathor’s, and he knew Lady Asfour hardly at all, Kathor’s owner not in the least.
Jarryd dodged another blow. “We don’t have to do this!” he called out to Kathor.
“Have to. Want to,” Kathor replied, swinging at him again.
“There’s another way,” Jarryd said. He was worried about how their owners would respond to his idea, but none of that would matter if he couldn’t get through to Kathor himself.
“Not really.” It was hard to hear Kathor over the roar of the crowd, but he sounded implacable.
“This is going to sound crazy,” Jarryd said as he sidestepped a blow that nearly caved in his ribcage, “but I’ve been looking for you.”
“Why are you talking?” the big man replied, grunting as he launched another attack. “This is a time for fighting, not talking.”
“I’m trying to get you to listen to me!” Jarryd was starting to feel a little desperate. “We don’t have to fight each other. We can be allies.”
Kathor paused for a moment to gesture at the arena. “Can you not see where we are?”
“I have an idea.
